  • “Mayan Caribbean” received the Spirit of Excellence Award yesterday, which the Excelencias Group annually gives to promote good practices in different fields related to tourism.

Within FITUR, the international tourism trade fair held in Madrid from January 18th through the 22nd, the Central American tourism promotion agency (CATA), together with the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (INGUAT) and the Honduran Institute of Tourism (IHT), joined forces to present the multi-destination initiative “Mayan Caribbean” as a new tourist product.

The event, where Ministers and maximum authorities of tourism of the 7 Central American countries – Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama- attended, highlighted a tourism initiative that seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of promoting a sustainable development model in protected areas, in harmony with the host communities as direct beneficiaries of the tourist activity thus contributing to improve their quality of life and sustainable management of the place’s natural and cultural heritage.

Mayan Caribbean blends the Maya and Garifuna cultures in a green environment of sustainable authenticity. It is the ideal place to have life experiences, disconnect from the routine and connect with the senses, soul, nature and culture; it is truly an earthly paradise. In this region there are 12 community tourism initiatives that make up the Network of Active and Cultural Tourism of the Mayan Caribbean.

The Mayan Caribbean initiative has been promoted by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and is integrated by the region of Izabal in Guatemala and the North coast of Honduras. The project also has the support of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT), the Honduran Institute of Tourism (IHT) and the National Chambers of Tourism of both countries.
